The best Cornish cream teas
How do you take yours?
If you’re in Cornwall there’s only one way to load a scone and that’s jam first, cream on top. In foreign lands (Devon) they may well disagree but whether you butter first for a truly indulgent feast or just get stuck in with lavish dollops of jam and cream, everyone knows the Cornish way is right. Even The Ritz agrees! Their Executive General Manager wrote in reply to a jam or cream first debate by the Evening Standard:
I can confirm that we at The Ritz London would prefer to encourage the ‘jam and cream’ method of preparing scones.
(…and it has to be clotted cream, thick delicious Cornish clotted cream.)
We decided to pick out five of our favourites:
The Dwelling House, Fowey
Quirky and quaint you’ll be spoilt for choice on jams and melt-in-the-mouth scone choices never mind the fantastic array of teas and coffees! Friendly staff, freshly prepared food and a lovely atmosphere all served up in a traditional old merchant’s house dating back to the 16th century.

The Garden, Trenance Gardens, Newquay
Head to the tea room at the old cottage where local Tregothnan loose-leaf tea is served alongside scones with jam and cream in little Kilner jars. Inside and outside seating plus disabled access. Sit outside and enjoy the sound of the stream. Beautiful and peaceful setting with lovely staff.

The Camel Trail Tea Garden
Situated halfway between Wadebridge and Bodmin, the tea garden makes for the perfect stop off on The Camel Trail, especially as they serve delicious oven-fresh0 scones. Enjoy a cream tea in the terraced gardens, set in an apple orchard.

Farmhouse Kitchen Restaurant, Trevaskis Farm, Connor Downs
Pick your own fruit and sample the jam! Set in 28 acres, Trevaskis Farm is a great family day out where you can pick your own, enjoy the farm park and orchards or shop for homegrown produce, topped off with a delicious cream tea.
Stay at Porth Cottage
Beaucliffes, Porth Veor Manor
We couldn’t do a cream tea blog and not include Beaucliffes! Served in the lounge or on the terrace, Beaucliffes afternoon tea menu includes homemade scones and a pot of tea or coffee. Gluten free scones available.
