What’s On – Cornwall Events 2015

February & March 2015

As we move towards Spring it’s time to get out and about in Cornwall with beach cleans, guided walks and time to appreciate the beauty of nature. In a land built on myth and legend, some of the more curious Cornish customs come to light with silver ball hurling festivals on the calendar, pasty championships and St Piran’s Day.

Chapel Porth (National Trust) Beach Clean
Gloves, bags and litter pickers are provided as well as a drink in Chapel Porth Café at the end. 12.30 – 2.30pm.

7 – 8 February

Porthcothan Cliffs Seaside Scrub Bash (National Trust)
Help clear the scrub and earn a bonfire-cooked spud!

9 February

St Ives Feast & Hurling of the Silver Ball
Celebrating the consecration of the Church of St Eia in 1434, follow the mayor’s procession to near Porthmeor Beach for the blessing of the Venon la Well before watching the ancient form of Rugby involving hurling a silver ball. The sport takes place around town as participants play to win the silver ball from each other before returning to the Guildhall at noon to receive a silver coin.

14 February

Winter Tree ID, Lanhydrock (National Trust), Bodmin
Can you tell an oak from an ash? Learn all about our trees. 10am – 12pm Adults £5, Children £2.

Valentines at Trerice (National Trust), Kestle Mill, near Newquay.
Take a candlelit tour of the house followed by a three-course meal and discover the hidden love story. 7 – 10pm, £20, booking essential. Tel: 01637 875404.

14 – 16 February

Mawgan Church Daffodil Festival
Cornwall is well known for its daffodils and Mawgan Church will be full of blooms of every variety. Tea, coffee and cakes are served each day as well as soup at lunchtime. 10.30am – 4.30pm.

17 February

Hurling (Silver Ball) Festival, St Columb
Watch this ancient tradition as a silver ball is hurled down the street in a game akin to Rugby. Market Square 4.30pm.

17 February

Guided walk, Lanhydrock (National Trust), Bodmin
Free guided winter walk normal admission price. 10.30 – 11.30am.

19 February

Tudor Trinkets and Treasures, Godolphin (National Trust)
Create your own Tudor trinkets. Free event, normal admission charges. 11am – 3pm, Helston.

22 February

Point to Point, East Cornwall Hunt Great Trethew, Meneniot, Liskeard
Watch the thrills of horses jumping over brush fences in a competitive 2.5 – 3 mile race. £15 – £20 per car. Refreshments available.

28 February

World Pasty Championships, Eden Project
How could Cornwall not have a pasty championship?!? Held on the day before St Piran’s Day (Cornwall’s saint), traditional and unusual flavoured pasties compete in a variant of amateur and professional categories before the winners are presented in an Oggy Oscars Ceremony.

March

5 March

St Piran’s Day
A day to celebrate Cornwall’s Patron Saint.
Festivals in: St Ives, Bodmin, Truro.

7 March

St Piran’s Festival, Redruth
Midday procession followed by music and entertainment.

6 March

Falmouth Spring Festival
With Spring just around the corner, venture to Falmouth where gardens and green spaces will be open for walks, talks and a spring clean.

14 March

Fifteen Cornwall’s Spring Farmer’s Market, Watergate Bay
Join the team from Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen at Watergate Bay as they host a showcase of local food. From cheeses to chutneys, local artisans will be setting up their stalls and some well-known chefs will be providing live demos.

21 – 22 March

Beer and Mussel Festival, Cornish Arms, St Merryn
Join Rick and Jill Stein at their gastro pub for a traditional beer and mussel festival showcasing some of the great Cornish beers and ales and some great cooking.

27 March – 5 April

The Truro Festival
Cultural festival with many free events.

Oyster Gathering and Seafood Harvest, Falmouth
Falmouth Food and events festival in celebration of the oyster gathering season.
