Great Ideas for Family Breaks in Cornwall

There are many reasons why Cornwall is so popular as a summer holiday destination, despite the fact that the weather can’t always be guaranteed to be sunny.

There are the dramatic surfing beaches along the north coast, and the quiet coves of the south; fabulous seafood, served up in everything from quirky beach shacks to celebrity-endorsed restaurants; lazy cream teas and homemade ice creams; and beautiful landscapes in every direction you care to look. Above all, there is an abundance of activities for the whole family to enjoy. We have hand-picked a few of our favourites:

For adrenaline junkies:

The Eden Project is one of Cornwall’s most popular attractions and is now home to the SkyWire, England’s longest and fastest zip wire. Brave visitors can ride headfirst in a new ‘superman’ harness, travelling some 600 metres above the iconic Rainforest and Mediterranean Biome structures, reaching speeds of up to 60 mph! It’s not for the faint-hearted, who may prefer the stunning displays of plants from around the world.

For beach bums:

Cornwall boasts no fewer than six pristine Blue Flag beaches, from Sandymouth in the north to Gyllyngvase on the south coast, each noted for its cleanliness. Polzeath and Porthtowan are favourites among surfers, while Carbis Bay and Porthmeor are known for their natural beauty. Pack your bucket and spade and head down to the beach for a lazy day of exploring rockpools, making sand castles, playing beach games and a bracing dip in the sea.

For walkers:

The South West Coast Path offers plenty of opportunities to discover the dramatic Cornish coastline. The Atlantic Coast is perhaps the most rewarding, with towering cliffs, secluded coves, sandy beaches and a healthy dose of fresh air. A good pair of walking boots is all that is needed to really make the most of the breath-taking scenery, and perhaps a pair of binoculars to spot wildlife on and offshore, including grey seals, basking sharks and a host of birdlife.

For free:

As well as the great outdoors there are plenty of attractions that won’t break the budget on a family holiday. Fancy seeing where that delicious Cornish ice cream comes from? Head to Callastick farm and watch the whole process, plus meet some rare breeds down on the farm. Alternatively, cider lovers can take a trip to Healy’s Cornish Cyder Farm and sample some (very) strong varieties. There’s also a chance to step back in time at the Halliggye Fogou caves, mysterious underground tunnels associated with Iron Age settlements, or visit Heartlands, a former derelict mining landscape transformed into a free cultural playground spanning 19 acres with a constantly changing programme of events and exhibitions.
