Walking the Salt Path

When Raynor and Moth Winn faced the devastating loss of their home, it set them on an extraordinary path of resilience, reflection, and rediscovery – walking all 630 miles of the South West Coast Path with just a tent and a little over £100. 🥾⛺

Raynor’s moving memoir, The Salt Path, beautifully captured their strength and the remarkable healing power of nature. 🌿📖

Now, with a stunning new film adaptation starring Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs, we’re invited to walk beside them once more – this time through the sweeping, cinematic beauty of the Cornish coastline. 🎬🌊❤️

We hope Ray and Moth’s story inspires others to experience the magic of the coast path – whether you’re discovering it for the very first time or returning to familiar trails to uncover new treasures. 🌿🌊✨

As they found out, winding your way along the dramatic coastline – stumbling across secret coves, wandering through ancient woodlands, and finding warm welcomes in cosy harbours – offers more than just a physical journey. It has the power to transform. 💫🏞️

We’re shining a spotlight on some of the stunning Cornish locations featured in the film, inviting you to follow in the footsteps of Ray and Moth – plus Gillian and Jason – to experience The Salt Path for yourself. 🎥🥾🏖️

Tidal Pool, Bude

Sandymouth Bay Beach 🌊

Though not specifically mentioned in Raynor Winn’s memoir, it’s easy to see why Sandymouth Bay was chosen as a filming location for The Salt Path. Owned by the National Trust, this beach is wild, dramatic, and wonderfully untouched – a place that captures the raw, restorative power of stepping away from the everyday. 🌿✨

Just 5.5 miles down the coast lies the welcoming town of Bude. Here, you’ll find a perfect contrast to Sandymouth’s untamed beauty – with independent shops, cosy cafés, and tempting restaurants to explore. 🛍️🍽️

You can also take a dip at nearby Crooklets and Summerleaze beaches. Don’t miss Bude’s famous sea pool at Summerleaze – an ideal spot to unwind and watch walkers tracing the South West Coast Path above. 🏊‍♀️☀️

View across Hawkers Cove Hawker’s Cove

Padstow 🎣🌊🍽️

Padstow, a postcard-perfect fishing town on the Camel Estuary, is loved for its lively harbour, winding streets, and mouth-watering food scene. 🐟🛶

In The Salt Path film, we follow Ray and Moth as they pause here to savour Rick Stein’s famous fish and chips by the harbour – a well-earned treat on their journey. (Foodies also rave about Paul Ainsworth’s No.6, another local gem.) 😋🍴

Head west along the South West Coast Path and you’ll reach the peaceful beauty of Hawker’s Cove – where golden sands meet rugged cliffs and crystal-clear waters. It’s a perfect place to pause, breathe, and reflect – just as Ray and Moth do on their unforgettable journey. 🥾🌅💙

Sunbathers, swimmers and surfers on Fistral beach Fistral Beach

Newquay 🏄‍♂️🌆🌊

As The Salt Path draws Ray and Moth back into the bustle of society, they pass through the vibrant seaside town of Newquay – a stark contrast to the solitude and serenity of their time in the wild. 🛤️✨

Newquay is bursting with energy, from adrenaline-fuelled water sports to buzzing nightlife. But for Ray and Moth, the call of the coast path proves stronger, and they soon set off once more – with the trail leading from the town centre to some truly spectacular beaches. 🌊🍹

Fistral Beach, Newquay’s iconic surf spot, is renowned for its golden sands and world-class waves. It’s a magnet for surfers of all abilities and boasts brilliant facilities for families too. 🏄‍♀️👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Follow the coast path further and you’ll reach the dramatic beauty of Holywell Bay – where grassy dunes roll down to the sea, the magical Holywell Cave appears at low tide, and the sun sets behind the striking Gull Rocks. Both Fistral and Holywell Bay take centre stage in The Salt Path – and once you visit, it’s easy to see why. 🌅🏖️✨

Lands End and Longships Lighthouse Land’s End and Longships Lighthouse

Land’s End 🌊🌪️🏞️

In an interview promoting The Salt Path, Ray recalled a striking moment at Land’s End during a fierce storm – just her and Moth, alone, facing the full force of the Atlantic. 🌬️🌊
“We really could have given up,” she told The Guardian. “But at that point, we realised how much that path was giving us – how much life it was giving us back.” 💬💙

That wild, windswept stretch of the West Penwith coast has long held a powerful pull on those who visit. Take the coast path towards nearby Sennen Cove and Gwynver Beach, and you’ll discover a side of Cornwall that feels timeless, raw, and truly life-affirming. 🥾🌿🌅

Rame Head and signpost Coast Path And Fingerpost At Rame Head

Rame Head 🗺️⛪🌊

Rame Head, a striking headland on Cornwall’s south-east coast, marks the halfway point in Ray and Moth’s remarkable journey along The Salt Path. It’s here they pause – taking a moment to reflect on how far they’ve come and quietly wondering what lies ahead. 🌿💭

With a shared smile, they begin the climb to the ancient chapel that sits proudly atop the headland. From the summit, you’re treated to sweeping views – west across Whitsand Bay and east towards Plymouth Sound. On a clear day, you might even catch a glimpse of Eddystone Lighthouse on the horizon. 🏞️👀

A truly soul-stirring spot, full of perspective and promise. ✨
