A fantastic array of Cornish accolades for 2014

We love Cornwall and we know just how full of fantastic attractions, beautiful beaches, fabulous food and friendly people it is but it’s also good to see others appreciate it too! Voted as the best child friendly holiday destination in the WORLD in a recent poll of 2,000 parents, Cornish places and businesses have also been recognised as award winners for their amazing attributes by industry experts.

Cornwall – best destination

Winning the title of ‘Best UK Holiday Destination’ for the SIXTH time in the British Travel Awards 2014, the county was recognised for

“turning first time visitors into lifelong fans”

The Eden Project and the National Maritime Museum were also voted as ‘Best UK Leisure Attraction’ and ‘Best UK Heritage Attraction’ respectively. Eden also walked off with a Gold award for the ‘Theme Park and Attraction of the Year’ in the Visit Cornwall Tourism Awards whilst also being recognised for its garden, gaining a bronze after The Lost Gardens of Heligan and St Michael’s Mount in the ‘Garden and Country House of the Year Category’. Cornwall’s Crealy Great Adventure Park was commended as a great theme park and Newquay Sea Safaris (Gold), Newquay Zoo (Silver), Paradise Park (Bronze) and Wingz Bird & Animal Sanctuary (Commended) were all recognised in the ‘Wildlife & Marine Attraction of the Year’ category.

‘Art, Museum & Industrial Category’ of the Year went to the Telegraph Museum in Porthcurno, St Austell Brewery received Silver and Geevor Tin Mine gained a Bronze award. Finally, crowned ‘Winner of Winners’ in the Cornwall Tourism Awards and awarded Gold in the ‘Garden & Country House of the Year’ and Silver in the ‘Wildlife Friendly Business’ The Lost Gardens of Heligan also won a European Garden Award at the European Garden Heritage Network awards of 2014.

Winners on the Cornish food front

In 2014 two prestigious Michelin stars were awarded to Restaurant Nathan Outlaw with Driftwood and Paul Ainsworth at Number 6, in Padstow, gaining their first Michelin stars. Sharp’s Brewery were delighted when their new Atlantic Pale Ale gained recognition, walking off with a gold in the Bitter sub-category in the Brussels Beer Challenge and Sharp’s also gained two silvers at the awards with their Wolf Rock and Connoisseurs Choice Single Brew Reserve. CAMRA also recognised St Austell Breweries ‘Proper Job’ as a silver winner in the Champion Bottled Beers of Britain.

Choose Cornish Champions

Within Cornwall, Choose Cornish awarded the ‘Champion of Champions’ to The Cornish Food Box Company, a Truro based shop and box scheme who have been recognised for incorporating the Cornish spirit into everything they do. Polgoon Orchard and Vineyard were recognised for their work in collaborating with another local business whilst ‘The Truly Cornish Café Trail Award’ was won for the second year running by Boscastle Farm Shop and Café.
